1977-June-19 Brand X Smucker's Brooklyn, NY Disc 1 - 46.08 1 Disco Suicide 9.54 (1) 2 Why Should I Lend You Mine 10.09 (2) 3 Deadly Nightshade 10.20 (3) 4 Nightmare Patrol 6.44 (4) 5 Malaga Virgen 9.00 (5) The taper shut the machine off between songs, so some of the comments from Robin (?) are lost. Some are included, but you can tell there is some that is missing, including the band introductions. (1): after T1 + before T2 "Thank you and good evening. Welcome. We're Brand X. That was a track from the current, Morrocan Roll album we had out earlier at the moment (?) and it's called Disco Suicide. And uh.. The next title that we're going to do is another one from the same album and this one's called, strange enough, ah, right, why should I lend you mine.." (2): after T2 + before T3 "Thank you. We have a slight ? in the guitar department and a slight failed ? So we'll manage to soldier on regardless and try our new tune on you. One that's not on any the current albums. It's written by one our most recent additions, Mr Morris Pert on percussion, who in his spare time plays the pianist. And this tune is, he's called, Deadly Nightshade." (3): after T3 (there is a cut in the tape) "Thank you. Ah. There is some strange buzzes in his mind (?) and how about these lights. Anyway.. We've never been to Brooklyn before, so you haven't see us, so I'd like you to, ah, say hello to the members of this.." (tape is cut here) (4): after T4 + before T5 (there is a cut in the tape) "..after a bottle of wine, his favorite ? would be Malaga Virgen." (5): after T5 "Thank you and, ah, so much (?)" Notes that came with this recording: Brand X with one of their 2 NYC concerts (that I've heard of) in 1977. This is a rather short set, don't know if this is all of it but it's a nice set and not very widely circulated (apparently) and my source said it's from his master aud (this being from my 1st gen copy of his master). He did a good job, the band comes through clearly and folks this one does include the fourth of my 4 favorite drummers (actually it would be either Terry Bozzio, or this fellow, Kenwood Dennard, both are really excellent). And guess what? My computer found its lost paster! No more setlistless desc. Files from glasnostrd19! (sometimes, anyway) Performance Quality: B+ to A- (quite good) Secording Quality: B to B+ source: 1st (?) generation audience tape runtime: 46:11 This is a pretty decent sounding recording of a concert whose happening itself is questioned in a Brand X listing of live gigs by scottrades, but he acknowledges there may be a 35 minute recording of this show. Although his listing includes many setlists, it doesn't include any setlisting for this concert. I got this about a quarter century ago from a guy who said he taped this, and I'd say it sounds like a 1st generation recording. Some minor problems in part of the 1st song, not very noticable, certainly not a high fidelity recording, but he was pretty close up, made a good recording, I'd guess with a small stereo portable with built in mikes. He edited out the band introductions, but these 5 songs are all uninterrupted and it comes through clearly. I haven't listened to this much at all, maybe because there are some nice FM's from 77, but this sounds better than I remember when I got it. I had a lousy deck then, and this is the 1st time it's been digitized and seeded from my tape, transferred on a Nak deck. I'm so envious of those New Yorkers. They get TWO (maybe more than that), 1977 Brand X shows, and Boston gets 0, just "the Paradise and Berklee stages are too small for our band". (I suppose that figures, 1977 was the year the Red Sox lost the AL pennant by 1/2 a game to the Detroit Tigers due to a rained out game not made up for the Sox.) But there were some nicer things in 1977 too which I hope to share with you. this is one. One of those 2 shows is this which sounds like a small club - NOT the Beacon Theater. I got 2 Brand X shows from this source (R.G.), and I plan to share both since they are both pretty listenable quality and good shows. The other one is Beacon Theater NYC 10/30/77. You'll recognize the Beacon acoustics in that. This is considerably better, even though both the shows were recorded with the the same deck/mikes. I asked him to send me all the Brand X he had recorded, and these were the only 2 he had. I haven't seen/corresponded with R.G. in many years, but knowing how he feels about Brand X, if there were others, he would have recorded them all. His Percy addiction was heavy duty, and he was living in N.Y.C at that time. That's a good place to have a Percy addiction. Although I did not record this, 1977 was my 1st year of recording shows, and a big 30th anniv. party for that looked like it would be cancelled due to a decisive loss in 2007 Router Wrestling Olympic Games, instead the whole wagon had been pushed back a year (that's part of why my initial uploads have been so heavy on 1978, instead of 1977). There will be several fun times from 1977 to share on dime from me, but this was one kind of fun glasnostrd19 did not get to have. I just got a wicked Goodsall jones. Boston was NOT the place for that in 1977. Brand X never made it there in 1977 (or 1976 - I don't know of any US Brand X 76 gigs at all). THAT was a drag, because it left me with a Percy jones, a Goodsall jones and a Kenwood jones that made me REALLY wish I lived in San Francisco, Ca. or Chicago, (or maybe London...) Oh yeah, I almost forgot... My 4 favorite drummers? You've heard the Jack. You've heard the Bill (Bruford), you've heard the Billy Bob Corn on the Cob with ham! Kenwood Dennard is #4, and he does appear here (if he doesn't my face will be green as Larry Bird's 1986 NBA jersey). He is excellent. I found that out seeing Pat Martino, and if Bertha III is ready for webwalking, that will be her first "child" to share on dime (also one of the 1st recordings I helped record). That was a great time and Dennard was a big reason for that, as he is here too. I met Kenwood Dennard at a hot Club D'Elf show a few years ago (once again he contributed alot to that evaluation). He Seems like a nice guy, not to mention a terrific drummer (I told him so). Terry Bozzio is close to this level too, another of my favorites. If you like Bozzio, there's a good chance you'll like Dennard too. I may be unsure of the 1st gen. lineage, but I am sure there is NO DAT or CD in this lineage. And I didn't notice any azimuth problems wuith this transfer or in my copy of it. (of course if there are eeklair a/k/a "Azimuth Man" will be sure to let us all know. I think he likes Brand X.) do not sell this recording. Trade freely and losslessly. Have mercy on Percy!
